A Lasting Legacy: Christina Andersen’s Bequest to Mayflower Brighton

On Tuesday 22 September 2026, residents, families and team members at Mayflower Brighton gathered for a very special occasion - the dedication of the newly renovated Gift Shop in honour of the late Christina Andersen.
The Gift Shop has long been a familiar and much-loved part of life at Mayflower Brighton. Its renovation has created a brighter, more welcoming and accessible space, with additional room for stock and an inviting new façade.
But the story behind the transformation is about far more than the space itself. It is a story of generosity, connection and the lasting difference a gift in a will can make.

A legacy of kindness
Christina Andersen was a much-loved resident of Mayflower Brighton for many years and developed a strong connection with the community she called home.
She had a particular appreciation for Mayflower’s beautiful gardens and was known for her kindness, generosity and thoughtfulness. Christina also helped create feature gardens at Mayflower, leaving her own personal mark on spaces enjoyed by residents and visitors. During her lifetime, she supported Mayflower in a number of ways, including through financial donations and the contribution of care equipment for the benefit of residents.
Her support for Mayflower continued beyond her lifetime through a very generous bequest in her will.
Christina’s nephew, Greg Bell, joined residents, team members and volunteers for the Gift Shop dedication and shared warm reflections about his aunt and her time at Mayflower.
His words were a moving reminder that aged care is not simply about the care provided, but also about the relationships, connections and sense of belonging that develop over many years.

A small space with a big role
A Gift Shop may seem like a small part of an aged care home, but for residents it can play a meaningful role in everyday life.
The Mayflower Brighton Gift Shop offers residents the opportunity to browse, choose a present for someone they love, pick up something special for themselves or simply enjoy the familiar experience of going shopping without needing to leave the community.
It is one of the many everyday spaces that help make Mayflower Brighton feel like home.
Whether it is spending time in the gardens, meeting family for coffee, seeing a film in the movie theatre, taking part in activities or stopping by the Gift Shop, these everyday experiences support independence, connection and enjoyment.
Thanks to Christina’s bequest, the renovated Gift Shop is now even more welcoming and accessible for residents, families, visitors and team members.
Creating places that enrich everyday life
At Mayflower, aged care is about more than providing high-quality care. It is also about creating places where people can continue to enjoy the routines, relationships and experiences that are important to them.
Thoughtfully designed spaces can make a real difference.
A welcoming café, a comfortable place to spend time with family, a beautiful garden or a familiar shop can all contribute to the rhythm and enjoyment of everyday life.
Christina’s generous gift has helped create exactly that - something tangible that residents can enjoy today, while also leaving a lasting legacy for the Mayflower Brighton community.
The lasting impact of a bequest
Leaving a gift in a will to an aged care organisation can create benefits that continue well beyond a person’s lifetime.
At Mayflower, bequests and philanthropic gifts can support projects, equipment, facilities, programs and services that enrich the lives of older people and help create welcoming communities in which they can continue to live well.
Christina’s bequest is a beautiful example.
Her generosity has helped transform an everyday space into something brighter, more accessible and more enjoyable for the people who use it.
And perhaps most importantly, it means Christina’s connection with Mayflower continues.
Her legacy can be seen in the small, everyday moments that happen in the Gift Shop - a resident choosing a present for a grandchild, stopping to browse, sharing a conversation or simply enjoying a familiar part of daily life.
