Jancel's Journey

Quiet Confidence and Meaningful Care: Meet Clinical Care Coordinator, Jancel
When you meet Clinical Care Coordinator Jancel, you are struck by her quiet confidence and professional warmth. Since joining Mayflower Brighton in November 2024, she has made a lasting impact on residents, families, and her fellow team members — and will soon be stepping into the role of Care Manager for the coming months.
Nursing as a Natural Path
For Jancel, nursing was never a distant idea but a natural part of her upbringing. “My grandmother taught me how to read and use a mercurial thermometer, a traditional mercury sphygmomanometer and a stethoscope when I was only eight or nine years old,” she recalls. “So nursing was familiar to me from an early age. There’s no one big inspiration story — it just felt like the right path.”

She began her career overseas at 20 years old before moving to Australia, where her passion for care and community flourished.
I love life and I love living – and being around people who have lived such rich, full lives is both an honour and privilege. Our residents are the embodiment of life itself – they share stories, wisdom, experiences and I feel humbled because I’m not even half their age, so they give me so much perspective on life.
A Special Connection with Ernie
At Mayflower Brighton, her role goes far beyond clinical leadership. She places great importance on building strong, meaningful relationships with residents. One of her closest bonds is with resident artist Ernie, whose story featured in the last edition of Grapevine.
Ernie is constantly painting, creating new pieces that brighten his windowsill. When the sunlight streams through them, they take on the look of stained glass. Jancel enjoys
visiting him regularly to see what he is working on next. “My favourite painting of his is one of the garden,” she says, smiling as she admires the piece pictured below with Ernie.

Supporting a Passionate Team
Equally important to Jancel is her team of nurses. “The team are supportive, collaborative, and passionate,” she says. “We look out for one another and work together to make sure residents receive the best care possible.”
She also treasures the culture at Mayflower. “Mayflower has a warm and welcoming environment. It feels like a true community where residents, team members and families are all interconnected. Mayflower really is a diamond.”
A Life Full of Adventure
Beyond her role, Jancel thrives on adventure and variety. She enjoys snowboarding, diving, hiking in the bush and yoga, along with aerial sports — performing tricks and dances in an aerial hammock. She also loves quieter pursuits such as reading, meditation, and photographing sunrises and sunsets.
She is most proud of being a mother to her nine-year-old son. Her experiences also include five years in the humanitarian sector, working in remote parts of the world. “I’ve slept in airports, lived in a tent for months and crossed rivers — but I’ve also travelled in a helicopter and a United Nations private plane,” she reflects.

These experiences have shaped the thoughtful, resilient and compassionate leader the Mayflower Brighton community is proud to call their Clinical Care Coordinator — and now, Step-Up Care Manager.
