June is Men’s Health Month – Let’s Talk Mental Health

June marks Men’s Health Month in Australia – a time to encourage men to take charge of their wellbeing, and to open up the conversation around both physical and mental health.
While men are more likely to prioritise physical symptoms, mental health often goes unchecked. But mental wellbeing matters – especially as we age, and particularly for those taking on caring roles.
Men and Mental Health
According to Beyond Blue, men make up 6 out of every 8 suicides in Australia. Despite this, many men still hesitate to speak up or seek support when they’re feeling low, anxious or overwhelmed.
Later in life, challenges such as loneliness, grief, retirement, or declining health can add further pressure to mental wellbeing. But there are simple, confidential ways to check in with how you’re feeling.
Try the K10 Mental Health Check-In
If you’ve been feeling out of sorts, the K10 mental health check-in is a great place to start. Offered by Beyond Blue, it’s a short 10-question quiz that gives you insight into your levels of distress and suggests next steps – whether that’s simply keeping an eye on things, or talking to someone.
Take the K10 Check-In Now
It’s free, anonymous, and takes just a few minutes – but it might make a big difference.
Caring for Others – Without Neglecting Yourself
Many older men also take on the role of caring for ageing partners, friends or family members. While this can be rewarding, it can also be emotionally taxing. If you’re a carer, your mental health matters just as much as the person you support.
Carer Gateway provides free support, counselling and respite services to unpaid carers across Australia. Learn more at carergateway.gov.au or call 1800 422 737.
We also encourage you to seek support at home, to assist with caring for a loved one. With our tailored care at home support, we can help you and your loved one stay connected to your community so you can both enjoy the peace of mind that comes from remaining in familiar surroundings whilst receiveing the best possible care
Another option is to consider moving in to residential aged care when you need further support than home care can give.
At Mayflower, we believe that needing support shouldn't limit your zest for life. In our aged care facilities, we offer a comfortable and safe environment tailored just for you or your loved one.
Our mission is to add a touch of brightness and purpose to each day, ensuring you and your love one can continue to live life on your terms with genuine, attentive care.
