Easter twice the delight at Mayflower Reservoir

Easter at Mayflower Reservoir is twice the delight, with two weekends dedicated to this special holiday.

Nina was delighted by the suprise visit from the Easter Bunny with the delivery of a Crunchie Bunny, and the opportunity to send a message to her daughter Rose.

Our Mayflower Reservoir aged care home has residents from many cultures, including quite a few with Orthodox backgrounds, so it goes without saying both the Western Easter and the Orthodox Easter need to be celebrated, and with gusto!

Helen, our Reservoir Lifestyle Coordinator loves how celebrating diverse cultures enriches the lives of residents living at Mayflower.

“Our Orthodox residents were happy to see that even in a non-Orthodox home, traditions can still be seen, smelt, tasted and celebrated. It really is a delight for the senses!” said Helen.

For the Western Easter, as celebrated by the wider community of Australia, residents enjoyed sweet moments with Cadbury Crunchie Bunnys (thanks again, Cadbury!) and a surprise visit from the Easter bunny.

Helen was able to get some happy snaps of residents meeting the Easter Bunny and holding a special message “While COVID-19 is keeping us apart, know that you are always in my heart. Happy Easter”. These special moments were then shared with each family individually.

Nina’s daughter, Rose, was delighted to receive her photo, and thanked the staff for their hard work.

“That’s gorgeous thank you once again. My mum looks so happy, thanks for taking such good care of her. Please thank all the staff as well for taking special care of my beautiful mum. Love you all. Stay safe.”

The following week, residents got busy, dying hard boiled eggs and making their very own Tsoureki bread and Kourambiethes almond shortbread biscuits for Orthodox Easter.

Tsoureki is a traditional and sweet Greek Easter bread, that has been made for centuries, and is traditionally eaten on the eve of Easter Sunday, to help break the fast. It is a plaited bread, often served with a dyed egg and sometimes presents as a wreath. Scroll down below to see what they look like!
