The Top 7 Reasons Why We Love Our Nurses

International Nurses Day is celebrated worldwide on May 12, marking the anniversary of Florence Nightingale’s birth – the mother of nursing.

So, we wanted to take this opportunity to share why we love our nurses at Mayflower, and hear from a registered nurse who makes Mayflower Brighton just that much more special.

Nurses are special people. They begin their careers with helping others in mind, putting others before their needs.

It takes someone extraordinary to train to be a nurse in a specialty field such as aged care. Aged care nursing is sometimes seen as the less appealing nursing career in society, but that couldn’t be further from the truth.

The top 7 reasons why we love our nurses:

  1. Our Nurses are leaders in aged care. They lead a team of carers and students and provide specialised care unique to an aged care residence or aged homecare.
  2. Our nurses have unique skills that can’t be taught. They know how to connect with older people and their families with empathy and respect.
  3. They put others before themselves – becoming a familiar face. Nurses work selflessly, ensuring our residents’ needs are met before their own, and build strong connections with residents, becoming a familiar face that they can depend on.
  4. They are specialists – our nurses understand the ageing body better than most and how to support a person to empower their independence and live comfortably, improving their quality of life.
  5. They are palliative care experts. Caring for someone in their last moments of life is not for everyone, but our nurses see and understand the privilege of supporting a person and their loved ones with compassion.
  6. Our nurses have keen observation skills. They spot health concerns unique to an ageing person before they become a real problem.
  7. They are dementia care experts. Having worked with people living with dementia, our nurses develop strategies that work and can be tailored to each person in our care.

To our dear nurses: thank you for all you do.
