What does ‘Dignity of Risk’ mean?
As you begin to navigate aged care, one concern that may arise is, “will I still have the ability to make my own choices and to maintain my independence?”
‘Dignity of Risk’ means choice.
It also means maintaining your independence and making your own decisions.
You have the right to choose something that may feel ‘risky’ to others, as long as you understand the risks involved and choose to participate. This may be as simple as jumping on a swing-set with your grandchild, or continuing to enjoy your whiskey of choice after dinner. You may even want to hop on your electric scooter and head to your favourite bakery.
Mayflower supports Dignity of Risk – so you can continue living your life, your way.
Dignity of Risk is a big part of what we believe in at Mayflower – person-centered care. This means your personal care plan is centered around your needs and wishes. It also means we bring whatever care you need, such as physiotherapy and podiatry services, to you in your home.
What if my decision involves risk?
Sound decision-making involves understanding risk, and we can help you weigh the pros and cons. Our role is to highlight the risks, and work with you to manage them, while respecting your decision.
It’s important to note, Dignity of Risk is included in the Aged Care Quality Standards. This means your aged care provider must recognise and respect your unique self-identity, culture, spirituality, social connections, overall wellbeing and needs. Helping you maintain your independence, and your dignity.
