Dressing for Happiness

How you dress can affect how you feel – and how others perceive you, or even feel around you.

By making an effort in how you appear outwardly – you can really help boost your own self-esteem, along with those in your care, too.

How? By showing you care enough to take the time to wear something pleasing to the eye.

Earlier in the year we spent some time with Nicole and asked her about our Mayflower Brighton Gift Shop.

While chatting, we discovered something that helps her stand out, in a very positive way. Her fabulous wardrobe.

One of the many ways Nicole makes the day of each person she meets at Mayflower, is by wearing something special.

“I always make sure I plan my outfit for the day, and wear something that's coloured or sparkly - so it brightens people’s day, and is something they will want to comment on,” says Nicole.

“It helps us to find a new way to connect, and we are able to start a conversation and build a friendship from that point on.”

The bright and sparkly attire is a big contrast against Nicole’s usual dress code, which is normally made up of comfortable neutrals and darker colours – with a favourite ‘go-to’ shade being black.

“For me, that's a big thing to do, I have never worn bright colours.”

Nicole’s wardrobe transformation was set in motion one day when Nicole realised residents enjoyed seeing her in glamourous attire.

And much to Nicole’s sons protest, her new wardrobe was bought while travelling together.

“We went on a country holiday, and found this cute little boutique filled with the prettiest dresses. I tried on every dress in my size and bought them all!”

“My son said, ‘a grandmother would wear that’ and I said, ‘then it’s perfect!” says Nicole, with the brightest of smiles.
